ATMOSPHERIC OZONE

Introduction to Questions on Antarctic Ozone:

  • The questions are outlined in two tables (this page, next page )
    • they explore the ozone hole over Antarctica, focussing on:
      • temporal changes in its size and shape.
      • vertical profiles of ozone concentrations
  • Reminder: you should submit your answers via oncourse .

Seasonal Changes in Antarctic Ozone
A NASA site provides links to animations, graphs and images of ozone levels in the Antarctic: http://jwocky.gsfc.nasa.gov/multi/multi.html
1. View the animations of the Antarctic ozone hole (the links below are to animated GIF's, but Quicktime movies can also be downlanded.  Ozone concentrations are depicted in colors based on the Dobson units for the following years:

(i) Estimate the minimum ozone level(in Dobson units) for 1996.
2
(ii) Estimate the minimum ozone level(in Dobson units) for 1997.
2
(iii) Estimate the timing (approximate date) when the ozone hole reached its maximum extent in 1996.
2
(iv) Estimate the timing (approximate date) when the ozone hole reached its maximum extent in 1997.

2. From the animations of the Antarctic ozone hole, does it appear to be always circular in shape?  If not, what other shape does it acquire?   HINT
3
3. Which southern continent (excluding Antarctica) is most affected by ozone depletion?   HINT

Vertical Profiles of Ozone Depletion over Antarctica
The NOAA Climate Modeling and Diagnostics Laboratory provides a webpage that provides links to data and information offered by the South Pole Ozone Program: http://www.cmdl.noaa.gov/ozwv/ozsondes/spo/index.html
4. Select the link entitled: 2001 Ozone Hole Animation
This animation depicts balloon data that shows changes in ozone pressure (in milliPascals) up to an altitude of 30km, a 'thermometer' of total ozone (in Dobson units) and corresponding graph of temperatures (in °C) versus altitude.

(i) Estimate the timing (approximate date) when the ozone hole reached its maximum extent in 2001.
2
(ii) Estimate the minimum total ozone value (in Dobson units) for 2001.
2
(iii) What is the altitude range where ozone pressure decrease to zero?
2
(iv) Does the altitude of the minimum ozone pressure correspond to that of minimum temperature?   HINT
2
(v) Does the timing of minimum ozone pressure correspond to that of minimum temperature?   HINT

5. Follow the links to South Pole Ozone Profiles for individual years, selecting the button corresponding to each of the designated dates and  then the button below the table of dates entitled "Request Ozone Profile"

These data profile profiles of ozone pressures and temperatures versus altitude for the selected date.

(i) Estimate the altitudinal range of the ozone minimum for each of the dates.

(ii) Do these data from Q.5(i) suggest worsening of the ozone hole over the past 5 years?   HINT
