General Information:

• This exercise is one that is required .
• It involves examination of a listing of recent earthquakes on the internet and assessment of their characteristics, especially magnitude and depth, and their relationship to plate boundaries.
• The questions are given on the next pages ( questions ) and in oncourse .
• Answers to all questions should be submitted via  oncourse .
• Check the exercise set I noticeboard ( news ) for announcements.

• Listing of major recent earthquakes are reported are various sites. The recommended link is: http://gldss7.cr.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/bulletin.html
• An alternate site with a longer list, which may be needed  is : http://gldss7.cr.usgs.gov/neis/qed/qed.html
• The abbreviations used in the lists are described in the table below and are also explained at: http://gldss7.cr.usgs.gov/neis/weekly/qed_abbrev.html
• If any of the sites become inaccessible, I will provide information about alternatives or additions in the announcements here ( news ).
• If you encounter any difficulties with access to any of the sites please notify me by email ( simon@indiana.edu ) and I will attempt to resolve problems, or suggest other options as soon as possible.
