"Music, Mass Media, and Museums: Storytelling in Public Spaces," a presentation by Donna Lawrence
On Monday, November 1, 2010, the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology sponsored a public lecture by Donna Lawrence, an award-winning producer of multi-media productions for museum exhibits and Creative Director of Donna Lawrence Productions. Composer and pianist Rachel Grimes participated in the presentation.
The lecture focused on the creation of soundtracks for multimedia installations in musuems and the related issues of representation. Donna Lawrence and Rachel Grimes have collaborated on a number of projects that draw on cultural and historical music traditions to build these soundtracks. Production materials for several of these projects from the Donna Lawrence Collection are housed in the Archives of African American Music and Culture.
The lecture was co-sponsored by the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Studies, Archives of African American Music and Culture, Mathers Musuem of World Cultures, Department of Communication and Culture, and Department of Anthropology.
