Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Folklore

PhD requires a minimum of 90 graduate credit hours including 30 hours of dissertation. A maximum of 30 credit hours of MA work may count towards the PhD. At least one minor and reading proficiency in two foreign languages are required. It is possible to obtain an Ethnomusicology minor within the department and/or to take Ethnomusicology classes towards track completion.

1. Social and cultural theory
  1. F722 Colloquium in Theoretical Ethnomusicology is a required course for this track.
  2. Two additional courses, to be selected with student’s committee.
2. Preservation and presentation
  1. F510 Multimedia
  2. F532 Public Practice
  3. F803 Practicum (3 crs.) or an approved performance ensemble course, which may include approved ensembles in the Jacobs School of Music.
3. World area
  1. The student and his/her advisor will determine which courses will fulfill this chosen track.
