Learning a New Routine

Sep 14, 2005

IU Kokomo freshman, Sunny Jewell, sits in the cafeteria with two friends on her left. The first thing that drew me to staying at home and attending IU Kokomo was what I had heard about the nursing program. While unsure about staying at home, I had heard that the nursing program in Kokomo was one of the best around. Also, Maci’, my fiancée, asked me to marry him (that pretty much solidified my choice). Then, I was offered a full-ride scholarship making me confident that the choice I had made was in God’s plan. From that, the IU Kokomo admissions office offered me a job as an admissions assistant, starting right after high school graduation.

I was so anxious about my first day! I knew my way around pretty well, but I had heard so many stories about how rough college life could be. And the first week was. I think the hardest part for me was stepping out into the unknown and learning how to readjust my schedule. I quickly learned that although there is a lot less class time, the homework gets doubled. After the first couple of weeks, I got adjusted and things are working out great. It’s so different than my small, conservative high school. You can tell they definitely want you to experience new ideas—and, oh, how my eyes have been opened!

Last week, Maci’ and I went to the drive-in movie on campus. It was great to go out and be with other students, and I am beginning to feel like I fit in as one of them. I have made some new friends in the nursing department, and I am looking forward to meeting many more.
