Homage to a Friend
Nov 4, 2005

I would like to take this opportunity to pay homage to a friend that has been my daily companion ever since I arrived on campus, a pal who made me laugh, made me cry, and most importantly, made me full: the bagel.
Let me put it this way: I love bagels. Cinnamon raisin bagels with peanut butter, blueberry bagels with raspberry jam, and plain bagels with cream cheese and lox (if I can get it). Bagels for breakfast with a hot cup of coffee, bagels at lunchtime with orange juice and a banana, and bagels just before bed with a couple spoonfuls of granola. Bagels are portable—you can wrap them up in napkin and munch them while you run to class. They’re warm and toasty, a perfect hot meal on a cold blustery day. Best of all, a pack of six bagels is only $1.49 at the Willkie Convenience Store.
People warned me that I would consume copious quantities of Easy Mac and Ramen Noodles, but I haven’t touched either one. Neither can compare to the bagels. Now they say that I will soon tire of eating the same thing for every meal, but I doubt it. How could bagels ever get old? This morning, when I was lying in bed, waiting for my alarm clock to go off, I composed a little poem:
Bagels, bagels, oh so cool.
Bagels, bagels, make me drool.
Oh, dear bagel, I’m in love,
And you’re the one I’m thinking of!
Peanut butter, apple jam
Roast beef, lox, Swiss cheese and ham!
Dearest bagel, you’re the top;
I’ll eat you until I drop!
Yeah. So this is what happens when I don’t talk about music.
