If student, for what course (number and name) is the research being done?

I. The Problem -- What do you want to find out?

II. Rationale -- Why is the research needed? Does related research not provide the answer?

III.Population Needed -- How many students are needed? From which grade level(s)? Are there any restrictions?

IV.Parent Consent -- Generally, if the research is done individually, with small groups, or with a whole class dealing with a topic normally not covered in that class, each participating student must have a parent consent form on file.

Will this research require a parent consent form? Yes
No
If yes, is a draft of the parent information letter attached?
Yes No

V. Time Requirements -- How much time will you spend with any one particular group or individual student? What is the total time you will be involved in any one classroom?

VI. General Procedure -- How do you intend to go about collecting the data you need?

VII. Reporting -- By what date will you have completed your study and submitted a summary report to the MCCSC?

VIII. SPECIFIC REGULATIONS CONCERNING RESEARCH STUDIES

The following regulations, in addition to the General Regulations contained in Section III, establish the conditions under which research may be conducted in the MCCSC:

1. All requests for University connected research studies will initiate from the Office of Early Field Experiences which will then submit them to the Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education or the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education.

2. Proposals will be submitted on a form provided through the office of the Assistant Superintendents of Elementary and Secondary Education. Said form will require the applicant to describe the nature of the research and to give information and purposes relative to the desired population and time requirements. In addition, if the research is of the type described in point 4 below; the applicant must submit a draft copy of the letter intended for use in securing parent’s permission.

3. The Assistant Superintendents of Elementary and Secondary Education will review the proposal with the principal of the school(s) which can provide the population needed. Opportunity for equalized building involvement should be maintained. The principal will consult with the teachers who might be involved in the study. After receiving a full explanation of its nature, affected teachers will decide whether to become a part of the project. There will be no discrimination against a teacher for not participating in research studies. The principal will then advise the Assistant Superintendents of Elementary and Secondary Education as to that school’s interest in accommodating the research study. Further arrangements for conducting the study will be made directly with the principal and teachers by the applicant.

4. In research involving students in a one-to-one, or small group situation, the classroom teachers and parents shall approve students’ participation prior to their enlistment.

5. All instructional material, including teacher’s manuals, films, tapes, or other supplementary instructional material which will be used in connection with any research or experimentation program or project shall be available for inspection by the parents or guardians of the children engaged in such program or project. For the purpose of this section research or experimentation means any program or project or portion thereof designed to explore or develop new or unproven teaching methods or techniques. (See Section 439 of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974.)

6. Precautions will be observed with all research studies to protect the individual student, teacher, and school’s right to privacy and to insure minimal interruption of the educational program.

7. A report of the results of the study will be provided by the researcher to the staff members involved and to the Assistant Superintendents of Elementary and Secondary Education.
