Background

Professor Carlson’s research program focuses on the development and application of new technologies to explore the mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis and identify potential therapeutic agents. To accomplish these goals, we work at the interface of chemistry and biology using techniques ranging from organic synthesis to mass spectrometry-based systems biology methods. In particular, we are pursuing the development of new technologies for natural product discovery including innovative methods for compound isolation, screening, and diversification. We are also utilizing state of the art metabolomic and proteomic methods to map the biochemical pathways associated with bacterial pathogenesis and antibiotic resistance.

Projects in Dr. Carlson's research group are highly multidisciplinary and members will gain expertise in many areas of chemistry such as organic synthesis, mass spectrometry, proteomics, metabolomics, and molecular modeling. In addition, members will utilize biological techniques from the fields of biochemistry, microbiology, natural products biosynthesis and molecular biology.
