Tochigi

Tochigi Prefecture is the largest prefecture in eastern Japan. It is home to an abundance of natural, cultural and industrial resources that have collectively helped shape modern-day Japanese culture. Upon the unification of the area during the Yamato period, the borders of modern-day Tochigi Prefecture were established and other factors that helped shape the rich history of the prefecture began to emerge. The oldest university in Japan, the Ashikaga School, was established during the Muromachi period; shortly thereafter, Nikko, home of the Toshogu Shrine and many other cultural splendors, was reserved as a designated shogunate holding. Also, Tochigi Prefecture and the State of Indiana have a sister state/prefecture relationship.
