Himeji

The reason for stopping in Himeji is to visit Himeji Castle, one of Japan's most beautiful castles. Nicknamed the White Egret (Shirasagi), it stands white and prominent above the city. Even whizzing by on the bullet train, one can catch a glimpse of it. Built in 1580 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, it is one of only a few castles in Japan that has not been fortified with concrete.
