The use and abuse of chemical substances we call drugs has occurred
in virtually all known human societies an cultures. sometimes these
practices are quite harmful, sometimes they are not. In this course, we
will analyze the political-economic, legal, social and cultural factors
which affect the use and abuse of consciousness-altering substances,
the extent and nature of the harm that these practices entail, and the
social response to them. Specific topics will include the nature and
meaning of addiction; the political-economy of legal and illegal drugs; the
relationship between drugs, violence and crime; the social correlates of
drug abuse; the debate over the legalization of drugs, and many others.
Readings: Coursepack available
Requirements: Completion of the reading assignment before class and
participation are required. Students will also be asked to write one 8-10
page research paper and 2 mostly essay exams.
Class Meeting: Two 75-minute lectures each week (TR, 11:15-12:30P,
SG C14)
