Each year, the Center for Survey Research conducts 25-40 research projects.

Current Projects

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). Since 1999, the CSR has conducted the NSSE for the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research. The NSSE is an Internet and postal survey of a random sample of undergraduates at colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada. NSSE12 will have more then 600 participating colleges and universities and the expected sample is about 1,500,000 students.

Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE). The FSSE surveys faculty at selected institutions that also participate in NSSE and asks about issues included in the NSSE. FSSE is conducted on the web only. FSSE12 should have approximately 150 colleges and universities.

Law School Survey of Student Engagement (LSSSE). The LSSSE is similar to NSSE but many survey items are adapted for law school students. Registration for LSSSE12 is underway.

Other NSSE-related projects. A Spanish language version of the questionnaire is used for college students in Puerto Rico. The NSSE web questionnaire was adapted for students in colleges in Canada, including a French language version that is used in selected Canadian universities. The Beginning College Survey of Student Expectations (BCSSE) is conducted during the spring and summer. The BCSSE allows comparisons of pre-college expectations with their first-year experiences. More than 100 insitutions participated in BCSSE11.

Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP). The CSR is conducting a multi-year project that surveys alumni of arts institutions (high schools, conservatories, colleges and universities) for the IU Center for Postsecondary Research. SNAAP had three pilot surveys from 2008 - 2010. SNAAP11 started in September and is finishing in mid-November. Sixty-six schools are participating in SNAAP11.

PACT Project. The CSR is working with the IU School of Nursing on a project to research the effects of various interventions to improve colorectal screenings. The project began in January 2008 and will continue through April 2012.

Water Management Surveys. This survey of stakeholders in the Tampa Bay area and the delta area of California focuses on the policies related to water management and the methods stakeholders use to participate in the decisionmaking processes. The survey began in spring 2012 and recently finished. Final datasets are being prepared.

Other current studies - The CSR is currently conducting two surveys of smoking cessation programs for the IU School of Nursing.

Upcoming Projects

Coming in the next six months - the CSR will begin a new survey on cancer screening for the School of Nursing. The CSR will conduct a survey of sociology undergraduates for the American Sociological Association.
