1. Use the Organic Syntheses Collective Volume VI to find an instance where the Curtius reaction was used to prepare 1-Phenylcyclopentylamine.
[1] Write down the page number on which you found the information
and also the years covered by the sixth Collective Volume.
Be sure to re-shelve it in the proper place.
2. Use the Beilstein CrossFireplusReactions database to find a reference that uses the reagent LiAlH4 in a reaction to make 1-Phenyl-cyclopentylamine.
[2] Obtain a printout of your answer.
3. Connect to SciFinder Scholar.
Find articles that deal with preparation of the compound with Registry Number 91-56-5.
[3] Write down how you went about searching for this information and tell how many records (hits) you found?
[4] What period of time did your search cover?
Limit your previous answer set to the year 1997.
[5] How many records did you find? (Should be under 5)
[6] Print out the records in the full format and hand them in.
Be sure to write your name on the printout.
4. For IUB students only: Use the SPRESI database to do a substructure search for isatin.
[7] How many compounds did you find?
[8] Select the first structure that has references in the database and obtain a printout that has the bibliographic information for one of the journal articles in which the compound appeared.
5. Name Reaction Search Using a Reference Book.
The Roush reference in problem set 1 utilized the Diels-Alder reaction, and new uses of the reaction are still being found. Find a description of the Diels-Alder reaction in one of the books specifically designed to identify name reactions. (Be sure to re-shelve it in the proper place.)
[9] List the title, year of publication, and page(s) where you found the reference.
[10] Briefly describe what goes on in a Diels-Alder reaction.
6. Use IUCAT to search for the series "The Chemistry of Functional Groups." How many entries are found that are held by any library in the system.
