Post-Yuan Politics in Mongolia
U520 section 0704
Larry Moses

This survey deals with the Inner Asian world after the Mongol Conquest of the 13th century. Although the focus of the course is on the Mongolian homeland (Greater Mongolia), it follows certain historical developments among the Mongol peoples beyond the frontiers of Mongolia proper. The course begins with the fall of the Mongol Yuan dynasty in 1368 and traces the recession of the imperial house to the Mongol steppe. Focus is given to the geography of Mongolia; the original culture of the steppe; the adaptations made to outside influences; the rise of feudal society; the arrival of Buddhism; the impact of Russian and Manchu invasions; and, finally, to Mongolia under Manchu rule.
