Course Description & Objective

This course traces the history of the Turks from their nomadic origins in Central Asia to modern times, focusing on various issues such as:

• pre-Islamic origins of Turkish nomadic civilization;
• directions of Turkish movements out of Central Asia;
• encounters with the Muslim empires of the Middle East;
• history of the Greater Seljukids;
• history of Asia Minor before the arrival of the Turks;
• history of the Anatolian Seljukids;
• early Ottomans & rival Turco-Muslim principalities of Asia Minor;
• consolidation of Ottoman power in the Middle East;
• decline and fall of the Ottoman Empire;
• emergence of the Turkish Republic;
• Turkey today
• a brief survey of Turkish nationalism
