Course Description & Objective
This course traces the history of the Turks from their nomadic origins in Central Asia to modern times, focusing on various issues such as:
- pre-Islamic origins of Turkish nomadic civilization;
- directions of Turkish movements out of Central Asia;
- encounters with the Muslim empires of the Middle East;
- history of the Greater Seljukids;
- history of Asia Minor before the arrival of the Turks;
- history of the Anatolian Seljukids;
- early Ottomans & rival Turco-Muslim principalities of Asia Minor;
- consolidation of Ottoman power in the Middle East;
- decline and fall of the Ottoman Empire;
- emergence of the Turkish Republic;
- Turkey today
- a brief survey of Turkish nationalism
