“Contemporary Society in Central Asia” is a course about contemporary society in Central Asia which uses the sociological perspective as a lens to interpret events and institutions in the region. Sociology is a science that tries to understand the way that societies work. This course will introduce you to the region on Central Asia and several topics in sociology which apply to the study of the region. Sociologists are interested in trying to describe the influence of society on human behavior and, in turn, the influence of human behavior on society. There is not one simple explanation put forth by sociologists concerning human behavior so we will be exploring various theories and research about how sociologists explain social phenomena such as terrorism, stratification, education and the family in Central Asia.
