When the Oirads defeated the Mongols in 1438, their leader attempted to become khan:

After taking over the rule of the Mongols, Togoon Taishi, seizing the great government, and bowing before the Eight Houses, came saying, "I will take the imperial throne." Bowing, he became the sovereign. Togoon Taishi, being drunk with the grace of the Lord, boasted, "If you are the Blessed Holy One, I am the descendant of the Blessed Lady." So saying, he struck the tents, shouting and knocking against them. Then just as he turned round and looked, from the nose and mouth of Togoon Taishi there came blood. Then embracing the mane of his horse, he looked and said, "What was that?" He saw that the keibür arrow among the arrows with eagle-feathers sticking in the eye of the quiver of the Lord, were moving and all dripping with blood. Togoon Taishi said, "The Male Holy One has caused his man to rule. I, Togoon Taishi, the son of the Female Blessed One, die . . ." (Altan Tobchi, p. 171, folio 85).
