- Structure of Turkic Languages
- CEUS-R 399/599
- John Erickson
This course provides a survey of the structure of the Turkic languages through a comparative analysis of three languages from different subgroups of the family: Turkish, Uzbek, and Kazakh. Students will examine topics in the phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax of a particular Turkic language and make comparisons with other languages of the family. Native speakers will provide illustrations of linguistic phenomena whenever possible. Work for the course will include exercises and projects that involve analysis and discussion of linguistic data. Students will work with data obtained from native speakers and from online resources. All participants will be expected to learn the Latin and Cyrillic scripts used for the languages in question and to become familiar with standard conventions for transcription and transliteration. While there are no prerequisites, students without a background in linguistics or without prior experience with a Turkic language may need to do supplemental reading.
