CeLCAR Language Materials Development Workshop

Presented by Amber Kennedy Kent and Beatrix Burghardt
May 17-25, 2009

This workshop will focus on creating Quality over Quantity when it comes to language materials development. Some topics we will cover are: defining clear learning objectives, ensuring the exercises fit the goal, writing clear lessons and directions, creating a broad, yet succinct scope and sequence, developing task-based materials, incorporating all four language skills effectively, and more. This workshop is very hands on and focuses on the applicable, rather than theoretical. Come ready to work!

The Best and the Better

Presented by Dr. Bill Johnston and Amber Kennedy Kent
Wednesday, August 26, 2009, 10 am - 12 pm

This workshop will focus on materials that you've created. Please bring one activity or set of materials that you've created that you are really proud of (you believe it is strong and it works well), and also an activity or set of materials that you feel would benefit from some further work. As a group, we will discuss what makes a strong activity, and give one another feedback on how to enhance the second group of activities.

Creating Advanced-Level Materials

Presented by Dr. Bill Johnston and Amber Kennedy Kent
Wednesday, August 26, 2009, 1 pm - 3 pm

This workshop will focus on pedagogically sound approaches to developing advanced-level materials. Please bring one "raw" authentic text (one that you find interesting but have not yet developed for teaching and learning purposes) in the language you teach. The text could be a newspaper or magazine article, brochure, travel guide, internet article, etc, and should be between half a page and one page in length.
