What is the CEL?
The CEL program
The Computer Educator License (CEL) Program is an 21 credit hour program for undergraduate students who are already in a teacher education program. What does this mean? If you are already pursuing a license to teach in Indiana - regardless of the age level or subject area of your education major - you can add on an additional Indiana teaching license related to computer education and technology integration. Additionally, since all teacher education programs require EDUC-W200, which is the first course in the CEL sequence, a CEL only requires 18 additional credit hours, meaning you can have an additional license with little additional coursework.
What can I do with a CEL?
Teachers with high levels of technology skills and experience using new tools to help students learn are in demand, and a CEL can add to your current program and experiences another reason why you could be a great addition to a school's teaching staff. Having a CEL allows a teacher to do several things:
- Serve as a techology facilitator/coordinator in local schools and school corporations
- Teach computing courses (computer applications, web design, computer programming) in Indiana secondary schools
- Enhance your marketability as a classroom teacher with additional knowledge and experience related to technology integration in your own classroom
What Else Should I know?
For information on what you can do with a CEL, check out this page: Why does the CEL matter?
In the CEL curriculum, courses are heavily focused on helping CEL students learn how to be a technology using professional in the best way possible - by doing it, both in our classrooms and in fieldwork in area K-12 school. For more information about courses, look here: What about the courses?
With the CEL, we want to help you become a full-fledged, marketable and quality professional. Therefore, require and help students create a CEL ePortfolio, in which students demonstrate to us and future employers their strengths, what they have learned and done, and why they are strong candidates for a teaching or technology coordinator job. For more information, go to this page: What is the CEL ePortfolio?
This site will take you on a brief tour of the CEL for undergraduates. Also, make sure that you also look at examples of what we are currently doing - this will continue to change and grow with time! If you have further questions, please email us - we will be happy to help you as you consider or plan for your CEL!
