Survey Cost & Paying for the HSSSE
Survey Cost
The cost of participating in the Spring 2012 administration includes a participation/user fee, a survey fee based on the number of students participating in the survey, and a reporting fee.
I. Participation/User Fee
Upon registration, each school pays a nonrefundable participation/user fee of $150.
II. Survey Fee
Each school pays a survey fee of $2 per student for the paper version ($1.25 per student for the online version), based on the number of students participating in the survey.
The fees cover all survey materials, shipment of materials to your school, shipment of completed surveys back to our office, and scanning of completed surveys.
III. Reporting Fee
This fee of $100 covers the cost of production of school data reports with survey results. Results are delivered electronically as a PDF Portfolio.
Schools may request a hard-copy of their report at an additional $50 per copy.
Special reports can be provided at a negotiable rate depending upon the reporting needs. Contact us at hssse@indiana.edu for more information
IV. Shipping
We ship surveys by FedEx Ground. If you want expedited shipping, please contact our office. For an additional shipping fee, we can expedite shipments of surveys.
In special cases, including shipping to remote areas and international shipping, we will add an additional shipping surcharge to cover the costs of shipping over and above standard domestic rates. In those cases, we will notify you before proceeding.

Paying for HSSSE
Data on student engagement are valued highly by schools and can play a critical role in school improvement. However, we are aware that, in the current economic times, it is a challenge for many high schools and K-12 districts to pay for this work. To that end, we have kept costs for HSSSE low; as a non-profit institution (we are situated within a public university), the cost structure is based exclusively on our operating costs. We are now also offering a discount for the use of the online version of HSSSE.
Here are some ideas for paying for HSSSE that other schools have found successful:
(1) HSSSE as PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: We offer on-site professional development workshops and technical assistance to guide teachers, administrators, leadership teams, school improvement committees, and others in making effective use of their student engagement data. Pairing the use of the survey with a professional development workshop provides the most value for the school dollar. Even if your school is not looking for additional professional development, perhaps you can use professional development funds to cover survey costs.
(2) PARTICIPATE as a DISTRICT or REGIONAL CONSORTIUM: If the costs are too much for an individual school, look to participate as a whole district, using a mix of school and district funds, or as a consortium with schools in your area. One benefit of this arrangement is that, when three or more schools from a district or consortium participate, we will provide – in addition to the standard school data reports – a district/consortium aggregate, giving you more valuable data for your work.
(3) EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATIONS: Many schools, districts, cities, and regions have educational foundations set up for funding special school and district projects. Look to local educational foundations for funds to support HSSSE; we can help you apply for these funds.
(4) GRANTS: There are many sources of grant funding available for schools and districts. If you know of a grant opportunity that can help you with funding for HSSSE, we will provide you with the information you need to apply, or collaborate with you on an application, for these funds.
