Things to Know: 2010 Postal Budgets

The US Postal Service announced that there will be no price increase in 2010 for market dominant products including First-Class Mail, Standard Mail, periodicals and single-piece Parcel Post. On January 4, 2010 the US Postal Service did adjust prices for their products such as Express Mail, Priority Mail, Parcel Return Service and other competitive products. Some adjustments resulted in a price increase while some of the competitive products had a price decrease.

Shape-based pricing, is still in effect—which means the shape and format of your mail piece will have a significant impact on your postage cost. This structure recognizes that each of the designated shapes has substantially different processing costs and prices will be adjusted accordingly.

As a result there should be a continued emphasis on mail and package design during the initial stages of mail preparation. For example: if the contents of a 2 ounce flat can be folded and placed into a letter size envelope you can save 44 cents. Or, if a 2 ounce parcel can be packaged in a flat it will save 34 cents. Please contact Mail Service or Printing Services for assistance in designing your mail piece.

The United States Postal Service continues to implement new standards which will affect cost. Please remain in compliance with new addressing standards for flat and first class mail along with Move Update requirements. Move Update compliance allows you to mail at Standard mail rates which can be a substantial savings over First Class mail rates. Proper addressing and updating your mailing lists allows departments to mail at the cheapest rates available and keep the mail piece in the automated mail stream for faster delivery. Non compliance with Move Update requirements can result in financial penalties for IU and your department. Printing Services offers a service at nominal expense (free if Printing Services processes the mailing) to help you keep your mailing lists in compliance with Move Update requirements.
