Serials Cataloging
ONLINE LIBRARY RECORD INPUT STANDARDS
- For all serial electronic
resources, paid or gratis, that are accessible system-wide, create a
call/copy record for the ONLINE Library.
- If the record is for the
electronic format and call/copies already exist on the record, change one
of the existing call/copies to ONLINE.
- Do not input a call number,
except for SuDoc numbers.
- Code the class scheme as
ALPHANUM or AUTO (exception: SUDOC).
- Code the item type as NONCIRC
- Code the home location as
E-JOURNAL for all electronic journals, even those that are parts of
aggregations, EVEN IF they are presented on the web site you are
cataloging in a database format.
- Code the records for the
aggregations themselves, however, as WWW.
- Code all other serial
databases as WWW.
- Code all monographs as WWW.
- Do not use any other home
locations than these two.
- Delete the remaining
call/copies that may appear on the record.
EXCEPTIONS:
- Do not delete any
call/copies from the records for the aggregators themselves, just for
those titles within the aggregations. The call/copies on the
aggregations are there as place holders for the orders and to indicate
each library's share of the bill for the aggregator. Just shadow those
rather than deleting them. Leave only the ONLINE call/copy unshadowed.
- If you are adding a
system-wide 856 field to a print record in lieu of adding a separate
record for the electronic resource (as we do in the case of SuDoc and other document records), then add the ONLINE
copy to the print record, but, obviously, do not delete the call/copies
for the other print volumes. This means that if you are adding a print SuDoc title that has an 856 field (and that 856
field works!), you will need to input a call/copy for ONLINE on the
print record.
