SUPPORT FOR STRATEGIC LANGUAGES AND CULTURES

2008-09 Academic Year

CAGS continued to support a number of initiatives in the area of strategic languages and cultures:

  • CAGS again served as the administrative entity for Indiana University’s Strategic Languages and Cultures Task Force, appointed by President McRobbie.
  • CAGS supported a successful application by Indiana University for Title VIII funding from the U.S. Department of State for improving language and culture instruction in the Summer Workshop on Slavic and East European Languages (SWSEEL).
  • CAGS continued to support the ROTC Strategic Languages and Cultures Program, funded by a $500,000 grant from the National Security Education Program and renewed for a third year.
  • CAGS again supported the development of an Arabic Language Learning and Translation Annex (ALLTA) by the Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Program.
  • CAGS supported the development of a training program by the Center for the Languages of the Central Asian Region (CeLCAR) for language and culture training for Afghan Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs). CeLCAR implemented the program in July 2008 and April 2009 for PRT commanders and in December 2008 for PRT agricultural development teams.

2007-08 Academic Year

CAGS supported initiatives in the area of strategic languages and cultures at Indiana University during the 2007-08 academic year, including:

  • CAGS served as the administrative entity for Indiana University's Strategic Languages and Cultures Task Force, appointed by President Michael McRobbie.
  • CAGS supported the ROTC Strategic Languages and Cultures Program, a two-year pilot funded by a $500,000 grant from the National Security Education Program of the U.S. Department of Defense. The IU press release on this Program can be found at http://newsinfo.iu.edu/news/page/normal/5516.html.
  • CAGS supported the development of an Arabic Language Learning and Translation Annex (ALLTA) by the Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Program.
  • CAGS facilitated the development and implementation of a Russian language course at the Indiana University Summer Workshop for Slavic and East European Languages for personnel from the Defense Intelligence Agency during the summer of 2007.
  • In cooperation with the Strategic Languages and Cultures Task Force, CAGS facilitated the development of a proposal for Albanian and Serbian language and culture training for U.S. troops deploying to Kosovo.

  • CAGS sent a representative to attend the U.S. Special Operations Command 2007 Language and Culture Seminar (August 2007).
  • CAGS sent a representative to attend the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command 2008 Culture Training Summit (April 2008).
  • CAGS supported the development and implementation by the Center for the Languages of the Central Asian Region (CeLCAR) of language and culture training for civilian and military personnel to be deployed to Afghanistan as part of Provincial Reconstruction Teams.
