Explanation of logic and terminology used in Teaching Room Utilization Reports

Teaching room utilization is based on a weekly snapshot of data taken from the Schedule of Classes file each fall, after drop and add (when files are ready for student census).

Room hours are computed by taking the enrollment of a section times the number of clock hours (defined as 50 minutes) the section meets within a given room. For example, if a section meets from 8:00 to 8:50 (50 minutes equates to1 room hour) on Monday ,Wednesday and Friday (resulting in 3 room hours).

Student contact hours are figured by multiplying the room hours times the enrollment for the section. Using the example above, (3 room hours x 20 students), the result would be 60 student contact hours.

Day vs. Evening room hours, any section beginning after 5:00 pm is considered evening.

Current methods of gathering teaching room utilization data:
Each fall the Schedule of Classes snapshot file is matched up with Space Information room inventory records. Note that that only those sections scheduled on the Schedule of Classes file are counted. Those sections which are reported as arranged (or not reported at all) cannot be included.

The Space Information database now feeds and updates building and room records within the PeopleSoft room scheduling process, offering IU a more accurate reporting environment for data analysis.
