Digital library for Earth System Education HERE

DLESE is the Digital Library for Earth System Education, a free resource that supports teaching and learning about the Earth system. DLESE's development was funded by the National Science Foundation and continues to be built by a distributed community of educators, students, and scientists to support Earth system education at all levels.

DLESE is operated by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Computational and Information Systems Laboratory and the NCAR Library on behalf of the education community. DLESE provides:

• Easy access to quality teaching and learning resources about the Earth as a system for a wide range of learners.
• Services to help users effectively create, use and evaluate digital learning resources.
• Interfaces and tools to allow student exploration of Earth data .
• Resources in DLESE include lesson plans, scientific data, visualizations, interactive computer models, and virtual field trips - in short, any web-accessible teaching or learning material.
• Many of these resources are organized in collections, or groups of related resources that reflect a coherent, focused theme. In many ways, digital collections are analogous to collections in traditional libraries.
• All resources in DLESE have been contributed by community members, are relevant to Earth system education, and are checked periodically for technical stability. The Reviewed Collection includes those DLESE resources that have been more closely examined and are considered exemplary.
• Finally, DLESE serves as the geoscience node in the National Science Digital Library (NSDL). NSDL serves the broader communities of science, technology, engineering, and math education.

Groundwater Activity: Edible Earth Parfaits HERE

In this activity, students build an edible aquifer using ice cream, food coloring, and other ingredients to represent the various layers. They will learn about groundwater, water tables, confining layers, contamination, and recharge. A link to a glossary of groundwater terms is provided

National Atlas Map HERE

An atlas that gathers and presents information designed to help us understand continental-scale environmental issues has been released by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC).

The North American Environmental Atlas is intended for use by both environmental scientists and the citizens of the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Its maps and services are designed to help the public visualize environmental topics at a continental scale.

An example of this is the pollutant mapping tool in Google Earth that allows you to explore information about more than 30,000 facilities across our Nation, Mexico, and Canada. For professional users of geographic information, this Atlas offers basic cartographic and environmental data for the continent at no cost.

NOAA EDUCATION OUTREACH
NOAA's many educational activities are distributed across the agency. This site has been designed to help students, teachers, librarians and the general public access the many educational activities, publications, and booklets that have been produced.

NOAA PHOTO LIBRARY
The NOAA Photo Library has been built so as to capture the work, observations, and studies that are carried on by the scientists, engineers, commissioned officers, and administrative personnel that make up this complex and scientifically diverse agency.

It also has been built in an attempt to capture NOAA's scientific heritage, which is in fact a heritage shared by much of the physical and environmental science communities in the United States today.

To date, over 32,000 images have been digitized and reside in the online NOAA Photo Library. This number will continue growing as long as there are environmental problems to study and solve, as long as the citizens of the United States are threatened by violent weather, as long as mariners need nautical charts, and as long as creatures of the sea need our protection to survive.

Until then, you are invited to join NOAA in this photographic essay that spans the World's oceans and atmosphere, carries you from the surface of the sun to the bottom of the sea, and travels through centuries of scientific thought and observations.

The Earth Science World Image Bank is a service provided by the American Geological Institute (AGI). This Image Bank is designed to provide quality geoscience images to the public, educators, and the geoscience community. The Image Bank now has over 6,000 images available to search, making it one of the largest sources of Earth Science imagery available on the web.
