NEWS2011: BSES-Hanoi University of Science collaboration. Updates coming this fall. July 6-9, 2009 Professional Development Workshop at Indiana University Bloomington: "Exploring for Life in Extreme Environments" This a workshop focused on helping teachers develop curricular materials and hands-on activities to engage students with the upcoming US and European space missions to look for evidence of life on Mars and the icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn. This topic gets students excited and integrates a wide range of knowledge standards for biology, chemistry, and earth science. The workshop can draw graduate credit from IU School of Education. More details HERE. February 4-6, 2009: Hoosier Association of Science Teachers Inc (HASTI) Annual Meeting at the Indianapolis Convention Center. BSES presented a workshop titled, "Using problems posed from earth and environmental science as exercises in advanced discipline-specific courses." Details: Exercises were presented demonstrating how earth and environmental science problems can be adapted for instruction in advanced biology, chemistry, or physics. A consortium of departments and programs from Indiana University, Bloomington, linked by interest in the earth and environmental sciences, are presently engaged in creating educational materials for use in K-12 classrooms. A series of exercises has been developed that can be applied at a range of levels with simple modifications of the materials provided. The goal is to create a resource for instruction, not only under the umbrella of environmental science, but also in traditionally defined, discipline classes such as biology, chemistry, or physics which may or may not incorporate environmental issues or studies into the curriculum. All offerings will include both instructor and student materials; the instructor materials will include citations of National Science Education Standards and the AAAS Benchmarks for Science Literacy along with detailed methods and practices sections developed in conjunction with teachers presently teaching in the public schools. The session will provide a demonstration of several of the modules with explanations of how they can be incorporated in a variety of instructional settings ranging from K-12, as well as indoor lab and outdoor field exercises. In addition to the handouts and teaching materials, a bank of equipment and instruments, not readily available in many schools, will be made available on a weekly loan basis to permit the students to have access to the appropriate level of instrumentation required to carry out some of the experiments. Long term monitoring programs will be integrated within the framework of these exercises and linked via web connections.
SPEA E262 – Please note that this course is being offered in the Spring semester. All BSES students should make sure they schedule this course.
