Physical Education Core Curriculum

The satisfactory completion of the following core classes will be required of every student working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. Note that two core courses, HPER P271 and HPER R275, take place at Camp Brosius, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

Physical Education Tracks


Each student will select one of the following tracks and will complete each of the classes listed as requirements for that option:
  1. Teacher Education;
  2. Exercise Science
  3. General Physical Education.

Teacher Education K-12 Track


This program will lead to a Teaching Certificate and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education degree. The holder of this degree will be eligible to teach physical education at the elementary, junior high/ middle school, and high school levels.

Note: A minor is strongly recommended for all candidates in the Teacher Education K-12 option. Few jobs exist for those with only one teaching area.

Exercise Science Track


The exercise science option will lead to a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education degree. It is designed to meet the needs of students who wish to pursue careers in a corporate/community fitness setting, a graduate degree in physical education, or a career in an allied field.

Exercise Science/Pre-Physical Therapy Track

This track is designed to provide courses and experiences necessary to enter most master’s-level physical therapy degree programs. Typically, master’s degree physical therapy programs do not require a specific undergraduate major, but do require a heavy concentration of math and science courses. The Department of Physical Education worked with the IUPUI Department of Physical Therapy to develop this pre-physical therapy track. Completion does not guarantee entry into an M.S.-Physical Therapy program, but does meet typical current entry criteria. Contact the IUPUI Pre-Allied Health program at (317) 274-7238.

General Physical Education Track


The general physical education option will lead to a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education degree. It is directed to those who may hold positions in public service, recreation, or other related areas in the profession.
