Graduate Non-Degree Program
College graduates can enroll for credit in a wide variety of undergraduate,
graduate, and professional courses throughout the university. It is very easy
for college graduates to apply as Graduate Non-Degree students at IUPUI. No
admission tests or office visits are required. Applications are processed as
they arrive. Some courses students are interested in taking may require
authorizations from the instructor or department prior to registration; this is
particularly true for math and business courses. Graduate Non-Degree students
may not take law, medicine, social work, or graduate-level business courses. All
applications will be returned to the Graduate Non-Degree Program for review.
A student who has a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or
university and has not been admitted to a graduate program at IUPUI may apply to
become a non-degree seeking graduate student through the Graduate Non-Degree
Program. This program is for the student who:
1. wants to supplement his/her academic background by taking graduate,
professional, or undergraduate courses;
2. wants to take courses for personal development;
3. is unsure about a graduate or professional program and would like to
sample available programs;
4. is awaiting final approval of graduate admission and is taking courses
with the guidance and approval of a degree program advisor;
5. wants to enhance skills utilized in a current career; or
6. wants to prepare for a change in careers.

U.S. Bachelor’s Degrees
The following are required for the Graduate Non-Degree (GND) admission
process:
- completed GND application;
- photocopy of bachelor’s degree final grade transcript or
diploma unless the degree was from an IU campus (a one-semester grace period
will be given);
- a check, money order, or credit card information for the non-refundable
application processing fee—cash will be accepted only at the Office of the
Bursar;
- completed application fee payment form.
All application materials need to be returned to the Graduate Non-Degree
Program. Applications cannot be processed until application fees have been paid.
An acceptance letter will verify the student’s status and includes additional
information regarding registration.
Admission Procedures for Non-Immigrant Visa Holders, Non-Native
English Speakers, and Persons with Bachelor’s Degree Equivalents from Outside
the U.S. (Except permanent residents or U.S. citizens with any Indiana
University degree)
Please read this section carefully.
To take courses at IUPUI for personal enrichment or to explore options for
further study, a student may apply to take courses as a Graduate Non-Degree
student. The Office of International Affairs must review a student’s
application and application materials before the Graduate Non-Degree
Program can process it.
If a student already has a four-year bachelor’s degree beyond grade 12, a
student may apply for Graduate Non-Degree status. For efficient processing of
applications, the following items must be received by the IUPUI Office of
International Affairs no less than two weeks before registration (please do
not submit an application without the following items):
- Completed Graduate Non-Degree Application for Admission. Applications may
be obtained from the IUPUI Graduate Office, the IUPUI Office of International
Affairs, and the Enrollment Center.
- Original academic records (including transcripts) verifying post-secondary
degree completion of four years or more. Multiple degree holders must submit
documentation of their first university degree. If a student wants to keep the
original documents, please submit them along with one set of photocopies to the
Office of International Affairs. Originals will be returned to the student after
comparison with the copies.
- Check, money order, or credit card (MasterCard, Visa, and Discover)
information for the non-refundable application fee payable to IUPUI. Cash can
only be accepted at the Office of the Bursar.
- Completed fee payment form.
- Photocopy of Social Security card if the student plans to use his/her
Social Security Number as the Student Identification Number. Otherwise, the
student will be assigned a student identification number by the Office of
International Affairs.
- Photocopy of verification of current status with the U.S. Immigration and
Naturalization Service (both sides of Resident Alien card, both sides of I-94
card, the page of the passport bearing an INS stamp, or an Employment
Authorization Card from the INSIAP for J1 and J2).
- A note indicating the date the student took/will take the IUPUI English as
Second Language (ESL) placement test, or documentation of English language
proficiency as described on the English proficiency policy for Graduate
Non-Degree applicants. To register for ESL placement testing, call or visit the
IUPUI Office of International Affairs. There is a non-refundable fee for this
test.
- Proof of Indiana residency for U.S. citizens, permanent residents,
political asylees, and refugees who wish to be considered Indiana residents for
tuition purposes (a photocopy of an Indiana driver’s license, a copy of a rent
receipt, a dated employee identification card, or similar document which
verifies the date the student moved to Indiana on a permanent basis).
After the student submits his/her completed application to the IUPUI Office
of International Affairs, it will be sent to the Graduate Office for further
processing. Within two weeks of submitting an application and application fee,
the student should receive a confirmation letter from the Graduate Office with
further instructions regarding registration.
Please Note: Individual schools and programs may have policies for
documentation of English ability which are different than the GND policy. Even
if the student is exempt from taking the ESL Placement Test for GND admission,
the student may still be required to take it at a later date if the student
becomes an applicant for a degree program, and it is required by the academic
unit.
Persons in F-2 or J-2 Visa Status If a F-1/J-1 spouse or
parent has visa documentation which was issued by IUPUI, the student is subject
to IUPUI’s mandatory health insurance requirement for international students.
The student will be billed for the student health insurance premium for each
semester the student registers for classes. If the student already has health
insurance coverage, the student must submit proof of this coverage and request a
waiver of the IUPUI policy from the Office of International Affairs within the
first two weeks of the semester for which the waiver is requested.
English as a Second Language Proficiency Policy for GND Students
Who Are Non-Native Speakers of English
Effective August 1, 1997, the English language proficiency policy for
Graduate Non-Degree applicants who are non-native speakers of English is as
follows:
Satisfactory English language skills are necessary for enrollment as a
Graduate Non-Degree student. Non-native English speakers must take the IUPUI ESL
test unless they have received a U.S. bachelor’s or higher degree and the
transcript documents one of the following:
- a cumulative GPA of 3.0 for a bachelor’s degree (A= 4.0) or 3.5 for a
graduate degree;
- two or more English writing or composition courses with a grade of B or
better in each course;
- the equivalent of IUPUI’s W131 with a grade of B or better.
Individual schools and programs may have policies for documentation of
English ability which are different from the GND policy. Students who anticipate
pursuing a graduate degree on this campus are encouraged to take the ESL
Placement Test, even if they are not required to take it for GND admission,
since their academic unit will most likely require it at a later date.
GND students are given a one-semester grace period in which to satisfy the
testing requirement. If the student is subject to this policy, the student must
take the ESL test before registration for a second semester will be permitted.
To register for the test, call or visit the IUPUI Office of International
Affairs (Union Building, Room 207, phone (317) 274-7000). There is a fee for
this test.
To receive an exemption from the ESL test requirement under the terms of this
policy, the student must submit an official transcript with the GND application.
Students who do not have official transcripts available upon application may
submit them to the Office of International Affairs at a later date. Documents
submitted to International Affairs after the GND application has been processed
will be reviewed within two months of submission.
For the purpose of demonstrating English proficiency under this policy,
composition courses must be transferable to IUPUI at the W131 level or higher.
Any applicant who wishes to enroll in ESL courses must take the ESL Placement
Test before course registration.
Social Security Number
In accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974 and Indiana PL22 of 1977, students
or applicants are advised that the requested disclosure of the Social Security
number to an office is voluntary. A student has the right to refuse disclosure
of this number or request its removal from records without penalty. A special
nine-digit student identification will then be assigned for use throughout the
duration of a student’s involvement with the university. The Social Security
number will be used to identify a student’s records; such as permanent
transcript, registration, grade reports, transcript requests, and certification
requests; as an identifier for grants, loans, and other financial aid programs;
and to determine eligibility, certify school attendance, and report student
status. A student’s Social Security number is not disclosed to individuals or
agencies outside Indiana University, except in accordance with the Indiana
University policy on release of student information.
Students should notify the Graduate Non-Degree staff if they wish to have a
student ID number assigned to them rather than use their Social Security number
when they return their application materials.
Graduate Non-Degree Policies
- Graduate Non-Degree students must maintain a minimum GPA of at least 2.5.
- Graduate Non-Degree students may not take more than 18 credit hours in a
single subject area without written permission from the department to the GND
advisor.
- Graduate Non-Degree students must register for at least one course every
two years to maintain active admission status. Reactivation may require
re-application.
- Admission to the Graduate Non-Degree program will not guarantee admission
to a graduate degree program.
- The number of credit hours—if any—a Graduate Non-Degree student may
later apply toward a graduate degree is determined by the degree-granting
program.
- Graduate Non-Degree students may not register for any medical research
course.
- If Graduate Non-Degree students need advice about specific course issues
or authorizations for designated courses, they can be obtained through the
department that offers the course.
- Graduate Non-Degree students may not enroll in graduate course work in
medicine, social work, law, or business.
Application to a Graduate or Professional Program
Because admission is decentralized at the graduate level, applications for
graduate or professional programs are obtained directly from the school or
department offering the degree. Each program sets its own deadline for
admissions.
Financial Aid for GND Students
A Graduate Non-Degree student who is taking prerequisites for a second
bachelor’s or graduate degree program may qualify for financial aid. See the
following "Financial Aid" section for more information.
Note: Only fully admitted students and Graduate Non-Degree students
completing prerequisites qualify for financial aid.
IUPUI Employees and their Spouses If the student or the
student’s spouse is employed full time at IUPUI, the Fee Courtesy Request
Form, available from the Office of Student Financial Aid Services, Cavanaugh
Hall 103, must be completed. If the student has been classified as a nonresident
of Indiana for tuition purposes, the student should note that tuition is
assessed at the out-of-state rate. Completing this form enables the student to
receive the fee and reductions available to full-time IUPUI employees and their
dependents.
Graduate Non-Degree Federal Financial Aid
To receive any type of federal financial aid, including student loans,
federal regulations require that a student must:
- be admitted to a degree program;
- be enrolled at least half time (6 or more undergraduate credit hours);
- meet other eligibility criteria.
Graduate Non-Degree students are NOT eligible if:
- the courses being taken are for the student’s personal enrichment;
- the courses being taken will apply to a graduate program to which the
student will be (or has been) admitted for some future term;
- the courses are being taken because the school or department indicated
that taking them might enhance the possibility of being admitted or raise the
student’s GPA;
- the courses are being taken as prerequisites for entry into a program at a
university other than IUPUI.
Graduate Non-Degree students may be eligible if:
- the courses are being taken because an IUPUI graduate or undergraduate
department or school has required the courses as prerequisites for admission to
a graduate or undergraduate program here at IUPUI, and
- those prerequisite courses being taken for any semester equal at least
half-time enrollment (6 hours of undergraduate courses); all of which are
prerequisites.
Questions regarding this information should be directed to the graduate area
of the Office of Student Financial Aid Services at (317) 278-4723.
