Requirements for Admission to the Undergraduate Program

New students indicating education as their choice among academic programs and education majors transferring to IUPUI from other colleges and universities are admitted to the University College or are dually admitted to the University College and the School of Education.

Students must have a 2.5 overall GPA to be admitted to the School of Education. Students not meeting this requirement may appeal in writing for admission for one semester on a probationary status to the assistant dean of student services.

Note: Admission to the school does not guarantee admission to Teacher Education. Admission to the School of Education, admission to Teacher Education, and graduation require a minimum overall GPA of 2.5.

Transfer Credit Policy

Acceptance of credit from other institutions and its applicability toward a degree from Indiana University will be determined by the Office of Admissions. After transfer courses have been credited through the Office of Admissions, the student should meet with an academic advisor at the School of Education who will then determine which of the transfer courses will fulfill requirements for programs in education.

The School of Education’s Learning to Teach/Teaching to Learn program is built on a coherent sequence of professional education courses and field experiences. To support program integrity and continuity, students interested in completing a program leading to initial licensure through the School of Education are encouraged to complete the entire professional education component at the IUPUI campus. Requests for transfer credits for professional education courses will be reviewed on an individual basis in consultation with program faculty; feedback will be provided in a timely fashion.

Students admitted into the Teacher Education Program must have a 2.5 GPA overall and a 2.5 in the transfer courses that would apply toward their teaching major (for secondary or all-grade programs). Elementary majors must have a 2.0 in the transfer courses that they use for their general education subject area courses.

Admission to the Teacher Education Program

Students wishing to obtain a teaching certificate must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program. Education majors should note that admission to the School of Education is separate from admission to the Teacher Education Program. The standards for admission to the Teacher Education Program, listed below, apply both to education and non-education majors. The standards must be met before the student may enroll in advanced professional education courses. 1. Attain a minimum overall GPA of 2.5.

2. Achieve in COMM R110 a minimum grade of C (2.0).

Note: COMM R110 may not be taken by correspondence.

Achieve in ENG W131 a minimum grade of C (2.0).

3. Elementary majors:

a. Achieve a grade of C (2.0) or higher in each of the following courses: EDUC Q200, EDUC W200, MATH 130/132 or MATH 136, MUS E241, and one of the required U.S. history courses (HIST H105 or H106).

4. Senior high/junior high/middle school (secondary) and all-grade majors:

a. Complete EDUC W200 with a grade of C (2.0) or higher.

b. Complete three-fourths of the general education course requirements, with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

c. Complete at least one-half of the courses in the major, with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

5. Receive qualifying scores on all sections of the admission test, the PRAXIS I Preprofessional Skills Test (PPST). See Education Student Services for information about the test and qualifying scores.

6. Complete formal application to the Teacher Education Program. Applications for admission are due early in the academic year semester prior to the beginning of professional education courses (e.g. in February for the fall semester and in October for the spring semester). See School of Education Home page on the Web for application and information.

Note: Admission to the Teacher Education program does not guarantee licensure by the state of Indiana.
