EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

The Respiratory Therapy Program at Indiana University Northwest prepares students to become members of a team of health care professionals to evaluate, treat, and manage patients of all ages with respiratory and other cardiopulmonary disorders in a wide variety of clinical settings. In addition, the program prepares the student in clinical decision-making (such as patient evaluation, treatment election, and assessment of treatment efficacy) and patient education. The students are able to provide advanced-level management of respiratory care, primarily seen in intensive care units and diagnostic laboratories. Classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction prepares students for advanced diagnostic, therapeutic, technologic, and administrative arts applied to critically ill adult and neonatal/pediatric patients.

Length of the Program Minimum of two-and-a-half years that include 20 credit hours of prerequisite course work, 44 credit hours of professional course work, and 10 credit hours of graduation requirements.

Structure of the Program The prerequisites may be taken on a part-time basis; the professional program is in a full-time day format.

Design of the Professional Curriculum The program curriculum is designed to teach general respiratory care as well as critical care and the use of life support equipment. Courses and clinicals are organized to provide a diversity of experience.

Program Facilities The Respiratory Therapy Program offices and the classroom/laboratory are located in Hawthorn Hall. Clinical experience is offered in eight hospitals and various health care facilities in the northwestern Indiana and Chicago areas.

Accreditation The Respiratory Therapy Program at Indiana University Northwest is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education.

ADMISSION

General Information

Students may apply for admission to the Respiratory Therapy Program at Indiana University Northwest after completion of regular admission to Indiana University and the first year of preprofessional courses as indicated under ‘‘Prerequisites’’ in this section. It is strongly suggested that applicants have a high school background in physics and biology and two courses in algebra. Students applying to Indiana University who do not have the recommended high school course work will not be denied admission to the program on that basis. However, it is the belief of the program faculty that these high school courses will enhance performance in the science courses at Indiana University Northwest. Admission to the professional program is competitive; therefore, completion of the prerequisites does not guarantee admission to the program.

Criteria Used for Class Selection Admission to the program is based on consideration of applicants’ cumulative grade point average, math/science grade point average, and personal interview.

Class Size The number of students admitted each year is limited to the number of clinical positions available.
