Message from The Colonel
Director of Athletic Bands - David C. Woodley
Greetings (one last time) from B'town!
It's hard to believe the 2009 football season has ended. It seems like yesterday when 270 members of your Indiana University Marching Hundred took to the asphalt field for Band Camp. Since that time we've seen 6 home games, a great road trip to Iowa, and one of the most exciting pep rallies in history before the Purdue game (ok that last little bit was for humor - ask your kids!).
It would be impossible for me to thank every single person who had a positive influence on this year's band, but I would like to take just a minute to thank some of those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty:
1) Gail, Jim, and the entire Tailgate Gang for putting on the best pre-game spread in the country! Each and every week, thanks to donations and hundreds of hours of volunteering, the Marching Hundred is treated to a wonderful home-cooked meal. This has been happening for over 10 years now, so we are VERY thankful for every person who has helped put this on. It started long ago with a couple of band families who started to tailgate before home games, and has grown into a full-sized spread for the entire band. It's impossible for us to tell you how much we truly appreciate all of your work!!
2) Our friends in Athletics - in particular Chuck Crabb - who allow us to use the Fieldhouse as our home base, and also give us time in the stadium and various locations in and around the Athletic Campus. Without their support, the Hundred would be dead in the water. We keep pushing for our own stand-alone facility, and we're hopeful that will be here sooner, rather than later.
3) Our Marching Hundred staff, work crew, and volunteers. The key to a successful band is to have smart, hard-working students, and a top-notch staff. We have both here at IU. Janis, Joel, Tim, Ian, Tiffany, Andrew, Chris, Johnny, Laura, Matt, Scott, Ross, Will - the list goes on and on. Our success rests in the hands of these talented men and women.
4) Dr. Popiel, who has served for 4 years as the Associate Director. A great friend who continues to serve above and beyond the call of duty for the Hundred.
Finally, our students. We have the best students around, and this year was no exception. Their musical ability, their work ethic, and their spirit keeps the Hundred going throughout tough football times at IU. We love our football Hoosiers, and we know their day in the sun is just around the corner. Until that time, our students do a great job of keeping the IU Marching Hundred musical, fun, and the best band around!
Thanks to all for a great season - we'll see you in 2010!!
