Coming to the Baby Language Lab: What to Expect

Once we set up your appointment, a research assistant will call you the night before to remind you about the day and time of the appointment.

On the day of the appointment, the experimenter will meet you in the Speech and Hearing Clinic Office and issue you a parking permit. This permit will enable you to park conveniently in front of the building. The experimenter will then escort you and your child to the Baby Language Lab.

Before starting the study, we will briefly play with your child to give him or her a chance to get comfortable and relaxed in the new lab environment. At that time, we will give you a consent form to read and sign. The consent form gives you more information about our research question and the experimental procedure to take place. We will ask you if you have any questions about the study before we begin.

During the experiment session your child will sit right next to you on a comfortable sofa, so you can witness everything we say or show to your child; you can provide your child with support and encouragement whenever needed. As a token of our appreciation for your participation in the study, your child will receive a small gift such as a book or a T-shirt.

If you and your child enjoy your participation in our research study, you are more than welcome to participate in other current or future studies in our Baby Language Lab. Also, if you know any parents who might be interested in participating in the study and bringing in their child, we will gladly contact that parent to set up an appointment.
