Facilities

The ARL is the sole user of the ARL itself, but also the primary user of the Group Experimental Listening (GEL) laboratory and the Anechoic/Echoic Test Chambers. In all of these facilities, 2-9 listening stations are contained within sound-treated booths. Each listening station consists of a matched set of EAR-3A insert earphones for stimulus delivery and a 15” touch-screen monitor which is used to mark intervals during stimulus presentation and collect responses from the listener. In all three facilities, Tucker-Davis Technologies (TDT) hardware is used to generate, shape and deliver stimuli to the listener under computer control using custom MATLAB software.

  • ARL: two computer-controlled listening stations and four additional personal computers for data reduction, data analysis, and other research-related tasks;

  • GEL: nine computer-controlled listening stations, four in one sound booth and five in another; and

  • Anechoic/Echoic Test Chambers: one computer-controlled listening station in each chamber with sound stimuli delivered via an array of loudspeakers arranged in a horizontal arc spanning ± 90 degrees azimuth.
