Responsible Conduct of Research Educational Committee (RCREC)

The Responsible Conduct of Research Education Committee is a subcommittee of the Executive Board of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. The committee is composed of members of the Association. It has as its mission to promote high quality teaching and scholarship in research ethics and research ethics education. One of its functions is to organize a seminar on research ethics or research ethics education to be held in conjunction with the Association’s Annual Meeting.

New members appointed to the RCREC (Spring 2009) Vivian Weil, Chair of the Executive Committee of the Association for Practical and Professional ethics has appointed the following persons to the Association’s Responsible Conduct of Science Educational Committee; James Dubois, Chair.

RCREC Membership

RCREC Membership Category

There is a special category of membership in the Association devoted to the responsible conduct of research and represented by a subcommittee of the Association, the Responsible Conduct of Research Educational Committee (RCREC). The RCREC subcommittee sponsors workshops on research ethics education at the Association’s Annual Meeting as well as selected locations around the United States.

RCREC Individual Membership

Any individual member of the Association can choose to be identified as part of the RCREC Special Interest Group by checking the special interest group on the membership form and will receive any information on RCREC activities on the RCREC e-mail news.

RCREC Organizational Membership

Organizations may become RCREC Organizational members at the $500 membership level. That membership will include an institutional membership in the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics and will allow access to the RCREC Internet-based Course in research ethics at no additional cost as well as discounts for attendance at RCREC workshops. Organizational members will also be listed in Profiles, the Association's membership list of institutional members.

RCREC Sponsor Membership

Organizations may become sponsors at the level of $2000 or more. This level of membership includes all the benefits of RCREC Organizational Membership, but Sponsors will also be identified in RCREC publicity as having a national leadership role in promoting RCR education.

If you are not currently a member of the Association and would like to join, please fill out the membership application form (available here in PDF format, which requires Adobe's free Acrobat Reader) and return it with a check for annual dues. The information you provide will be used in planning Association activities. Address information and description will be included in the Member Directory.

Research Ethics Workshops and Seminars

Workshop on Research Ethics Instruction at Annual Meeting

Responsible Conduct of Research Education Committee (RCREC) presents “RCR Instruction Face-to-Face: A Workshop”

What innovative or effective methods for face-to-face RCR teaching have you used successfully at your institution, such as case study analysis, film or book discussions, role plays, action research projects involving art, or journal clubbing?

We are currently soliciting proposals for 75-minute workshop sessions. Each session will include a brief plenary presentation on how to use the training method followed by small group work using the method. Proposals should describe the method that will be presented, the presenters and their credentials and experience using the method, and any handouts or aids that will be distributed to assist small groups in using the method. Proposals should be approximately 500 words. Please send proposals to Holly Bante at banteha@slu.edu, Albert Gnaegi Center for Health Care Ethics at Saint Louis University. You must register to attend.

Cost to participants:
$50 for Members
$100 for Nonmembers
Free for RCREC Institutional Members

The RCREC subcommittee of the Association has drafted a letter in response to a call for public comment on requirements for students and postdoctoral researchers involved in NSF proposals to be educated in the responsible and ethical conduct of Research.
