The National Science Foundation Science, Technology and Society Program is currently seeking a Program Director
Duties include:
- Allocating program resources to maintain a balance of support to meet the field's needs;
- Assessing trends and opportunities in the field with assistance of advisory panel;
- Pursuing affirmative action and EEO goals in selection of reviewers, panelists, and grantees;
- Representing the program to the scientific community and the public;
- Facilitating the transfer of funds from other agencies;
- Establishing contacts and maintain active involvement in the program field through participation in meetings and conferences and by undertaking other relevant activities;
- Pursuing a personal scholarly agenda, with results presented at professional meetings and published in academic journals, as workload permits;
- Participating in interagency meetings, coordinating groups, special task groups, staff meetings and site visits;
- Interview and recommend selection of support staff.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in a scientific discipline supported by NSF. In addition, applicants must have six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the program of interest. Ideal candidates will also have expertise in the social studies of science, science policy, and/or ethics in science.

The Jepson School of Leadership Studies is accepting applications for the position of Zuzana Simoniova Cmelikova Visiting International Scholar in Leadership and Ethics for 2012-13. This program, made possible by a generous gift from the Ukrop family, is designed to give visiting scholars who have lived abroad or who have extensive international experience the opportunity to develop courses, to design programs, or to conduct research on leadership ethics.
Visiting international scholars may be new Ph.D.’s or experienced scholars who hold a Ph. D. in an academic area related to the study of leadership and ethics. Scholars from newly formed democracies are encouraged to apply. Applicants should explain in a cover letter how their research, teaching, and future plans relate to the scholarship that they would pursue as a visitor at Jepson.
The Visiting International Scholar will be in residence at the University of Richmond for the academic year in order to pursue his or her own advanced research related to leadership and ethics. Successful applicants will receive a research stipend.

Chair of the Department of Philosophy
University of Alabama at Birmingham
The UAB College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Philosophy (http://www.uab.edu/philosophy/). Assuming commensurate experience and accomplishments, the Chair will be appointed as a Professor with tenure. We currently have seven full-time faculty with strengths in biomedical ethics and philosophy of science. The Department offers a major and minor in philosophy, and, across departments, sponsors a minor in Philosophy and Law and a concentration in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
We expect the new Chair to lead the Department. Specifically, the Chair will recruit several new positions over the next five years, some in bioethics. The Chair will also support existing programs, enhance our research, and work with our Center for Ethics and Values in the Sciences. The new Chair should collaborate with other units within our College and University, especially the School of Medicine.
Good applicants will have a doctoral degree in Philosophy, preferably in Biomedical Ethics or a closely related area. They should possess a record of scholarship, as well as good teaching and service. We prefer candidates whose research complements our existing strengths and who can collaborate with scientists across UAB.

The Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics invites applications for the position of Research Director. Working closely with the Center’s
Director, Lawrence Lessig, the Research Director will coordinate the work of the Edmond J. Safra Research Lab (the Lab) by identifying and supporting research projects, both of fellows and external to the Center, and helping to design projects to meet the Lab’s objectives.
The Lab is in the second of a five-year project studying “institutional
corruption.” “Institutional corruption” refers to influence, within an economy of influence, that weakens the effectiveness of an institution, especially by weakening public trust. We study a wide range of important institutions, with the ultimate goal
of producing a set of practical tools that might be used both to understand the dynamic of institutional corruption and to respond to it. More information on the Lab’s project on institutional corruption can be found online at: www.ethics.harvard.edu/lab.
The Research Director will assist in identifying, recruiting, and
selecting the research fellows and projects. He or she will also manage the broad range of research fellows and projects, both in residence and remote, who carry out the work of the Lab in a variety of different capacities. The Research Director will help plan
and oversee a weekly seminar designing the work of the Lab, and evaluating its progress. He or she will support the Center’s Director by serving as a liaison between the research fellows for all Lab projects, and assisting the Director with short and long-range
planning, policy development and implementation, and other projects such as writing the annual report.
The Research Director will be expected to help ensure continuity in research from one year to the next, while maintaining sustained
focus on the overall aims of the Lab. In the final years of the project, the Lab will build on earlier project work to identify tools and remedies to “institutional corruption.”
Basic Qualifications: Strong scholarly interest in the subject of corruption, and institutional corruption. Strong vision and commitment to guiding the project to meet its objectives. Strong analytic, planning and organizational skills. Deep understanding of
research methodology and processes. Ability to work in the context of a highly dynamic, multidisciplinary, and collaborative group environment.
The ideal candidate would have experience in both academic and start-up environments. He or she would add his or her own distinctive
vision to the project, and be able to demonstrate success in both academic and practical contexts.
Term: This is a full-time, one-year appointment with the possibility
of renewal, beginning in June 2012.

The Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics (CAPPE) is an Australian Research Council Special Research Centre involving a partnership between Charles Sturt University (CSU), Australian National University (ANU) and the University of Melbourne.

Washington and Lee University The Roger Mudd Professor of Ethics
Washington and Lee University is seeking an outstanding teacher and a recognized scholar to serve as the first Roger Mudd Professor of Ethics and the first Director of the Roger Mudd Center for Ethics. The Mudd Professor should possess competence in normative ethics together with a strong research track record in one or more aspects of public or professional ethics. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree with credentials appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in one of the departments or schools at Washington and Lee. Administrative experience, and ideally experience with the organization and implementation of academic programming, will be a plus.
Roger Mudd, the distinguished journalist and author, graduated from Washington and Lee in 1950. He has recently provided the university with a generous endowment for the creation of a new center that will help to equip our students with the intellectual resources necessary for sound ethical deliberation. The Center will incorporate the activities of a long established program called “Society and the Professions.” This program, in existence since 1974, has sponsored speakers, symposia and institutes integrating the ethical dimensions of a liberal arts curriculum with professional and pre-professional education in business, journalism, law, medicine and environmental studies. The resources provided by Roger Mudd’s gift, together with the funds that support Society and the Professions, will create a dynamic campus organization able to enhance and expand ethical discourse and ethical education across the university.
The Director of the Mudd Center for Ethics will teach a reduced teaching load and facilitate the enhancement and integration of ethics courses across the curriculum.
