Program Requirements

For students matriculating before June 2010

For students matriculating in or after June 2010

This certificate requires 24 credits, 15 credits (5 courses) in safety management courses and 9 credits in concentration courses (out of three concentration options). It can be a stand-alone certificate or an addition to a bachelor's degree.

Knowledge and skills developed:

  • overview of public, industrial safety, traffic safety, recreation safety and home safety
  • knowledge of general industry codes and standards of Occupational Safety and Health Act
  • knowledge of ergonomics and human factors
  • skills in safety education and training
  • skills in safety administration

  • HPER S101 Introduction to Safety Science (3 cr.)
  • HPER S151 Legal Aspects of Safety (3 cr.)
  • HPER S202 Fundamentals of Fire Protection (3 cr.) - no prereqs.
  • HPER S210 OSHA General Industry Standards (3 cr.) - no prereqs.

Job Outlook

The certificate would aid anyone who will deal with safety issues in business, government, the non-profit sector or industry. Students with the following majors may want to consider this certificate: Business, Continuing Studies, Criminal Justice, Environmental Management, or Outdoor Recreation and Resource Management. Students in the Police Academy and Volunteer Firemen may also find this certificate valuable.
