- 2009 fall - Dr. Joanne Bunnage was selected as a Faculty Fellow for 2009-2010 by the Office of Service Learning. The Office of Service- Learning Faculty Fellows are part of a learning community that explores issues related to service-learning and community-based research. They also serve as a resource for other instructors considering adopting a service-learning pedagogy or developing a community-based research design.
- 2009 fall - Dr. Ruth Engs (retired faculty) has just published Unseen Upton Sinclair: Nine Unpublished Short Stories, Essays and Other Works (Jefferson, NC: McFarland and Co.).
- 2009 fall - Dr. David Lohrmann, professor of school health promotion and director of graduate studies for our Department received the 2009 William A. Howe Award from the American School Health Association (ASHA). This is the highest award bestowed by ASHA. It recognizes individuals for outstanding contributions and distinguished service in school health. The following was taken from the award citation: “During the past 37 years, Dr. David Lohrmann has touched the lives of thousands of children and youth and helped shape the fields of school health education and coordinated school health.”
- 2009 fall - HPER-C 325 Health, Informatics and Aging and the graduate version HPER-C 625 Health Information Systems, Technology and Aging will be offered again in Spring 2010. Taught by Dr. Lesa Lorenzen Huber along with five other faculty members from across campus, the course serves as an incubator for new technologies to support the health and independence of older adults.

- 2009 fall - Jessica Zurwell, Public Health Major, won the 2009 AAHE Outstanding Undergraduate Health Education Major of the Year Award for Public Health.

- 2009 fall - Dr. David Lohrmann is a consultant to the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development’s Healthy School Communities Project and is author of ASCD’s manual, Creating a Healthy School Using the Healthy School Report Card, disseminated throughout the US and Canada.
- 2009 fall - This fall the Department of Applied Health Science welcomes Dr. Susan Smith to our faculty. Dr. Smith comes to IU from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville (UT) where she has worked as part of the health and safety graduate faculty since 1996. At UT she served as the coordinator for graduate and undergraduate health education and safety programs, taught graduate courses in accident prevention and emergency management, and served as one of the three qualified faculty for the Community Health Education Concentration of the UT MPH program accredited since 1969. Since 2001 Dr. Smith also served as the Director of the UT Safety Center. She was selected to hold this position by Dr. Robert Kirk when he retired after 33 years at UT. Dr. Kirk was not only one of Dr. Smith’s mentors, but also the first black professor hired at UT. In addition, he is an IU AHS doctoral alum.
- 2009 fall - We have a record number of doctoral students (50) and our masters enrollments continue to increase. We have over 500 undergraduate majors.
- 2009 fall - Several undergraduate courses offered by the Department of Applied Health Science have been chosen as electives in the new campus-wide General Education curriculum which will be coming in 2011. They include health, family, and nutrition courses.
- 2009 fall - In the fall we received approval of a new undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH). Beginning in the summer, this degree will replace our BS degree in Applied Health Science for new students. This aligns with our School’s new public health direction, and gives our undergraduates a very marketable degree.
- 2009 summer - Under the direction of Dr. Samuel Obeng, Director of African Studies at IU, a team of faculty from Indiana University, consisting of faculty from the Schools of HPER (including Dr. Lohrmann & Dr. Torabi) and Optometry, were invited to visit Ghana in August 2009, to explore opportunities for cooperation in research and teaching. They met with various faculty and administrators in Ghana. They also had an opportunity to interact with the Past-President of Ghana.

- 2009 spring - Dr. Noy Kay will again lead a “Travel Study” for both undergraduate (HPER H 445) and graduate (HPER H 645) levels during summer I, 2009. This course will involve an overseas field study trip to Seoul, Republic of Korea; Beijing, People’s Republic of China; and Bangkok, Thailand. The course primarily focuses on activities related to health, the main health challenges, health care systems, relationship of health and culture, status and health issues, the implementation of health programs, etc. Sightseeing will be part of studying the influence of cultures on people’s decisions regarding their behaviors and lifestyles, which in turn will impact health. The trip will take 12 days, May 13 – 25, 2009. It will cost approximately $3,500.00 for the airfare, 4-star hotel, bus transportation, meals, visa to get in China, and health insurance. - 2009 spring - Merrill Hatlen, Grant Consultant for the Indiana Prevention Resource Center, received the 6th Annual Brehm Award. The Sharon Stephens Brehm Award is presented annually to a person or program that best exemplifies efforts to reduce underage and dangerous drinking on campus and in the community.
- 2009 spring - Dr. Torabi named Debbie Szemcsak as an “Angel of the Year” especially for her expertise and care in helping international students who matriculate into our graduate programs and also for her help with the MPH accreditation report. Debbie serves as the graduate recorder and director of the graduate application process, as well as being the data supervisor for the School of HPER.
- 2009 spring - Our second Angel of the year is Mike Grannan, and he is HPER’s Assistant Director for Facility Support. He has been with Recreational Sports and the School of HPER since 1997 and with IU since 1987.

- 2009 spring - Erick Amick was awarded the Foreign Language
and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship for the 2008-2009 academic year. The
fellowship was awarded through the
African Studies Program here on campus. - 2009 spring - Cherie Blair, under the mentorship of Drs. Bonilla-Vega and Ona, has won an award from the APHA Public Health Education and Health Promotion Section for her abstract submission. She will be conducting her research over the summer in the Dominican Republic.
- 2009 spring - Jaclyn Blunck received the Home Economists Guild of Indianapolis Scholarship for 2009-2010.
- 2009 spring - Lauren Boyle was awarded a Graduate and Professional Student Organization Travel Grant last fall to present her research at two conferences (APHA and SOPHE).
- 2009 spring - Lindsay Briggs received a 3rd place award for her student poster at the Indiana Public Health Association Annual Meeting.
- 2009 spring - Ashley Davidson won 1st place in the HPER You Tube Video Contest.
- 2009 spring - Sara Elliott and Liz Lemay were nominated for a Be More Award hosted by the Bloomington Volunteer Network. Sara also won a working student scholarship given through the IU Student Foundation.
- 2009 spring - Marianne Foust received a Hutton Honors College Summer Professional Experience Internship grant.
- 2009 spring - Melissa Hacker was nominated for the Indiana Dietetics Association’s Outstanding Dietetics Student Award for 2008-2009 and received a Hutton’s International Experiences Program Scholarship.

- 2009 spring - Russell McIntire was selected by the IU Office of the Vice President for International Affairs to receive an International Enhancement Grant. McIntire will use this grant during the Summer of 2009 to work at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.

- 2009 spring - The inaugural Ryan White Distinguished Leadership Award was presented to his mother, Jeanne White Ginder. The award is in recognition of Ryan White, a rural Indiana youth who contracted HIV in 1984 and died in 1990.
- 2009 spring - The Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention released a new publication at its national conference in April, 2009, titled Tearing Down Fences: HIV/STD Prevention in Rural America. This guide is the first to focus on HIV/STD prevention in rural communities, and reflects the perspectives of the HIV/STD Prevention Work Group as well as other selected rural HIV/ STD professionals.
- 2009 spring - The 2009 RCAP national conference will be April 16-18, 2009 at Indiana University. The conference “HIV/STD Prevention in Rural Communities: Sharing Successful Strategies VI,” will be conducted at the Indiana Memorial Union on the IU campus. The deadline for submission of abstracts for presentations is February 6, 2009.
- 2009 spring - April 17 - 18, 2009. Lilly Health Education Overnight. This overnight health education event targets at risk girls ranging from ages 8-12 years old. Lessons on nutrition, exercise, first aid, and healthy relationships help to convey important tips for living a healthy life in all the areas of health. Approximately 50 girls attend with twelve educators from ESG & MPHA. Two meals and one evening snack are provided. The event is located at the Ruth Lilly Health Education Center in Indianapolis, IN. This event is free to all attendees.

- 2009 spring - January 19, 2009. The Masters of Public Health Association (MPHA) just received a grant from the City of Bloomington to provide HIV outreach to rural individuals on Martin Luther King Day. The goal of this project is to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS-related issues to residents of Southern Indiana who live in rural areas. By linking members MPHA and members of the community living in or traveling to rural areas, they will disseminate prevention materials to individuals who are using Rural Transit bus stops in Bloomington and Ellettsville, Indiana on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2009.
- 2009 spring - In line with the School of HPER’s plans to study international issues and global public health, a new course was offered this spring to IU graduate students. Global Health and Social Justice, HPER-C 617, examines the many facets of global health. It focuses on the most serious health problems throughout the world with special emphasis on the southern hemisphere. The idea was formed nearly a year ago and is the shared effort of Dr. Zobieda Bonilla-Vega, PhD, MPH and Dr. Fernando Ona, PhD, MPH. Assisting Bonilla-Vega and Ona for the class were Bernadette de Leon, HPER Director of Technical Services, and Dr. Paul Edwards.
