  • Donald James Ludwig, 95, Indiana University Professor Emeritus in the school of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation and the third Chair of our Department, died peacefully at his home on Friday, June 12.
  • Dr. Nan Jiang has finished her dissertation entitled “The Health of Young People in the United States, 1991-2007: Trends in Critical National Health Objectives” under Drs. Lloyd Kolbe and Dong- Chul Seo. Dr. Jiang is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco.
  • Dr. Kimberly Hieftje received her Ph D in Health Behavior from our Department in October, 2009. Her dissertation, chaired by Dr. Kathleen Gilbert, was entitled “The Role of Social Networking Sites as a Medium for Memorialization for Young Adults.” She had previously earned two other AHS degrees, both in Human Development and Family Studies. Less than a month after completing her doctoral degree, Kim headed to Yale University for her first job. There she will be overseeing a 5-year $3.9 million research grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
  • Alumni Panel Members Desiree Goetze, Elaine Johnson, and Karyn Valentine spoke with students in our H494 research class.
  • Priscilla Barnes, MPH ’98, is completing her PhD in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences at Western Michigan University.
  • Mary Boutain, MPH ’09, was hired by Area 10 Agency on Aging as the Director of Nutrition Services.
  • Lisa Braun, MS in Health Promotion ’08, was awarded the Best Student Paper for the ESG Student Monograph at the American School Health Association/Eta Sigma Gamma Conference in October ’09.
  • Ryan Chizum (BS in Public Health ’04), Kristin Hobson (MPH ’05), Kris Jarman (MS in Health and Safety ’02), Colleen Rose (BS in HDFS ’05), and Rebecca Worland (BS in HDFS ’00) participated in the Returning Alumni Panel on November 4th, sharing their insights with current students.
  • Christina Crecelius, BS in Health Education ‘09, won the 2009 AAHE Outstanding Undergraduate Health Education Major of the Year Award for School Health.
  • Laura Dinicola, BS in Public Health ’09, now works at Monroe County Health Department on H1N1 projects.
  • Dr. Michael Cleary, BS, ’76, MS ’77, has been appointed Interim Chairperson for the Department of Physical Education at Slippery Rock University. Dr. Cleary is a Professor in the Dept. of Health and Safety and has taught at SRU for 21 years.
  • Natalie (Buroker) Evans, BS in Human Development and Family Studies ’09, is working at Junior Achievement in Louisville, KY.
  • Genevieve Hillis, MPH ’08, won the Stephen Jay Leadership Award for Improving Public Health in Indiana in Dec. ’08.
  • Natalie Ingraham, MPH ’09, has begun working on a Medical Sociology PhD at the University of California at San Francisco. She will continue to work with the Kinsey Institute and their Kinsey Confidential Program.
  • Adam Karcz, MPH ’09, is an Epidemiologist at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Pediatric Hospital
  • Sarah Lauer, BS in Public Health ‘09, was hired as a consultant at Riley Hospital in Community Education and Child Advocacy Dept.
  • Adeyinka Okunade, BS in Nutrition Science ’09, is in medical school at University of Arkansas in Little Rock.
  • Sally Pelto-Wheeler, MPH ’08 passed the Certified Public Health (CPH) examination in August 2008, as part of the Charter Class. It is a national examination that can be taken by master and doctoral level public health professionals who graduated from accredited programs.
  • Teirra Riggs, BS in Public Health ’09, was hired at Community East Hospital as a case manager.
  • Nicole Smit, BS in Human Development and Family Studies’09, is at northern Illinois University in a graduate program in school psychology.
  • Courtney Stewart, MPH ’08, is the new Coordinator for Research Translation at the Indiana Prevention Resource Center. Courtney also did her MPH internship at the PRC.
  • Jemeila Williams, BS in Public Health ’09, works as a health educator at Positive Link.
  • Amanda Wood, BS in Nutrition Science May ’09, was one of 14 IU graduating seniors and 1,500 students nationally to receive a Fulbright US Student Award. She will spend a year doing an epidemiological study of child obesity in Pacific Islanders in New Zealand. Amanda did her undergraduate research on obesity here with Dr. Shahla Ray.

  • Jayme Levy, MPH ’08 is on the cover of the Spring ’09 issue of B’Nai B’rith Magazine. Jayme is B’nai B’rith International’s Assistant Director of Advocacy and Programming. She recently moderated a nutrition workshop at Homecrest House in Silver Spring, MD, and she is also involved with the B’nai B’rith Aging in Place program. While here at IU, Jayme took several gerontology courses, which helped launch her career in aging.
  • Tiffany Krueger is working at Schneck Medical Center as an Infant Educator.
  • Jennifer Burke is working as the Wellness Manager for AIT Laboratories in Indianapolis.
  • Stephanie Donolli is working as the Director of Public Policy at the Acute Long Term Hospital Association in Alexandria, VA.
  • Adam Karcz Has accepted a position as an Infection Prevention and Control Practitioner at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
  • Amanda Walner will be a traveling consultant for Sigma Delta Tau. She will be consulting multiple chapters around the country on different college campuses.
  • Alexis Wasserman will be working at Interior Move Consultants in New York.
  • Jessica Canfield will be studying either public health or geriatric management at University of North Florida.
  • Darcy Govert will be attending IUB’s MS in School Counseling program this fall.
  • Heather Gray will be back in AHS getting her MS in Nutrition Science and the courses needed for a career in dietetics.
  • Jordan Hollander will be attending Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Illinois in pursuit of a Masters of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Hannah Kesling will be going to the IUPUI Masters in Social Work program in the fall after an internship at Bloomington Hospital Children s Therapy Clinic this summer.
  • Sally Kirtley is heading for IUPUI’s School of Social Work for her MSW in August.
  • Emily Levy will attend the Physician’s Assistant program at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX.
  • Samantha Nester will be starting her DO at IU’s School of Optometry this fall.
  • Chris Vernon be moving to DC and starting an MPH program in Global Health at George Washington University. In the fall she will be applying for a dual degree program adding a degree in International Development Studies in Conflict Resolution.
  • Allison Vollmer will be heading for the Medical University of South Carolina’s Physician Assistant program.
  • Melissa Ackermann will be heading for the Mississippi Delta to serve in Teach for America.
  • Mindy Mayes is serving as an AmeriCorps member through AmeriCorps Improving Health throughout Indiana. She is a Health and Wellness Educator at Bloomington Hospital.
