Evaluation of the Form of the Essay
1.  Essay Structure:  Includes such things as a clearly presented introductory (thesis) paragraph, followed by the body of the composition with well-constructed transitions between paragraphs, and a conclusion that summarizes the key points and arguments used in the essay.

 
 



 
 



 
 

2.  Writing/Grammar Skills:  Includes proper sentence and paragraph structure, proper use of punctuation, appropriate word choice, spelling, page set-up (margins, etc.). 

3.  Use of Citations: Citations are formatted and used properly. 

4.  Presentation and Development of Thesis:  The argument, or position of the writer, should be developed through a logical presentation of evidence that successively builds throughout the body of the composition. 



5.  Length of Essay:  Minimum length in accordance with each assignment.

Evaluation of the Content of the Essay:
1.  Consistency of Argument:  Evidence cited  supports the essay thesis statement, and the relevance of the evidence is clearly elucidated. 



2.  Evidence and Citations:  A sufficient amount of evidence is used to establish a sound and thoughtful argument (the amount of required evidence will often be specified for each assignment). 

3.  Proper Application of Cited Evidence:  Proper perspective is given to the “weight” of the evidence (i.e., the data is not generalized). 

4.  Addressing Opposing Views: Evidence should be cited that weakens or discredits the antithesis of the argument.



5.  Interpretation of the Evidence:  The writer’s interpretations of the cited evidence should be thoughtful and well argued.
