Registration information for Indiana University students

Indiana University students may register for SCALI classes through OneStart (Second Summer Session). For Swahili, Zulu, Akan/Twi, Hausa, and Bambara, use the course number specified in the course catalog. For all other languages, undergraduates should register for A400 and graduate students for L506. Please note that you will need to get authorization to register for A400 and L506 from Dr. Alwiya Omar (aomar@indiana.edu).

This is IN ADDITION TO submitting your Expression of Interest and SCALI application. Please do not neglect to submit these forms. Indiana University undergraduates do not need to pay the application fee.

Language Offerings Update

The following languages will be offered:

  • Elementary Sudanese Arabic
  • Intermediate Moroccan Arabic
  • Elementary and Intermediate Kiswahili
  • Elementary Luganda
  • Elementary Setswana
  • Elementary Wolof
  • Elementary Xhosa
  • Elementary Zulu
  • Elementary Yoruba

Additional languages may be available pending enrollment and availability of qualified instructors. The level of instruction for any language is dependent on enrollment. Please complete the Expression of Interest Form to indicate which language you intend to study and at what level. The deadline for applications (with application fee) has been extended to May 1st. Please send in the Application Form as soon as possible to facilitate planning. Qualified persons wishing to teach at SCALI, please follow the guidelines for Instructor Applications.

A minimum of three students is needed for a language to be offered. The list below shows how many Expressions of Interest have been received and for which languages. Please note that this is only a very rough indicator of whether or not a particular class will be offered; we will not know for certain until all applications have been received on March 15.

SCALI Application Process

  1. Complete and return your Expression of Interest Form
  2. Complete the SCALI Application Form and return it to us with your signature.
    Deadline: March 15, 2005
  3. Please monitor this web site for updates on language offerings as well as for other relevant information, including accommodations.

All SCALI forms can be downloaded from our web site. Please contact us if you would like to have the forms mailed to you.

TUITION

Graduate students and professionals fee is $2565.00

Undergraduates: TBA

These costs apply to all participants regardless of state of residence or citizenship status. Tuition covers instruction for the full eight week session and all mandatory fees. It provides SCALI students with access to the campus technology clusters, recreational sports facilities, the Student Health Center, and free transportation on Bloomington city buses. Tuition will be billed by the Indiana University Bursar.


Funding Opportunities

Students are encouraged to seek financial assistance from their home institutions and other sources that might be available. Possible funding sources include:

  • Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS):
    Although the Indiana University FLAS deadline was February 1, we will continue to accept FLAS applications for SCALI.  They will be considered as funds become available. For further information, please inquire with your home institution or see our web site: FLAS
  • Foreign Language Enhancement Program (FLEP):
    This program provides scholarships to graduate students at CIC institutions wishing to study a language that is not offered at their home university. FLEP fellowships are available only for study at another CIC institution. For further information, please consult FLEP

Housing and Meals

We have reserved a block of dorm rooms in Ashton. SCALI students and teachers will occupy two floors and two wings of the building, with lounge space available on each floor.

  • Single rooms
  • Air conditioned
  • Carpeted
  • Bathrooms down the hall
  • High-speed internet access

Costs:

Rooms are $15.75 per day. In addition, there is a mandatory point-based Meal Plan for $9.50 per day. Housing and meal charges are not included in the SCALI tuition price; you will be billed separately through the university for these costs.

Instructors must check in by June 15th, and students by June 18th. Check out for all will be August 13 th .

How to Apply

On your SCALI application, indicate that you would like to receive a housing application. Return the application to us, along with any additional information about special dietary or physical needs. We will submit the applications to Housing.
