History

For more than 150 years, extraordinary women have called Alpha Delta Pi home. Originally called the “Adelphean Society,” Alpha Delta Pi was the first secret society for women and forged the way for women in the fraternity system. Our founding took place at Wesleyan Female College in Macon, Georgia – the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women. We continue to initiate progress throughout the fraternity system, being the first sorority to offer a shortened new member education program.

Alpha Delta Pi also builds and fosters a sisterhood of leaders. Sisters find Alpha Delta Pi a safe place to draw on their unique experiences and make their mark. We offer members the opportunity to obtain leadership experience as chapter officers as well as through sisters who are involved in various organizations on campus.

Beginning with six young women and now including over 200,000 initiated members and more than 190 collegiate chapters throughout the United States and Canada, Alpha Delta Pi has expanded beyond belief while staying true to its founding ideals: scholarship, high principles of behavior and true friendships.

Beta Alpha

Beta Alpha Chapter colonized at Indiana University in February 1922 with six women who wished to stand for high scholarship, true womanliness and unselfish service, organized as the Kappa Tau society. The ultimate goal was to become a chapter of a national organization. Kappa Tau soon became convinced that Alpha Delta Pi offered the qualities of womanhood for which they were striving. On May 18, 1926 the chapter was officially installed as Beta Alpha chapter of Alpha Delta Pi. The chapter moved into the SAE chapter house which held 25 women.

Over the next several years Beta Alpha chapter increased their membership and became involved on campus. Only after one full semester, Beta Alpha’s scholarship ranked third among the other sororities. An Alpha Delta Pi member held the presidency of the Spanish Club and Phi Chi Theta, National Honorary Commerce Sorority as well as several other offices throughout campus.

Beta Alpha took a hiatus between 1956-1984 and re-colonized in 1985. Homecoming activities such as mixers and sidewalk paintings took place with their homecoming pair, Theta Chi. They then paired with Sigma Nu for I.U. Sing and Delta Tau Delta for Little 500. On August 29, 1992 ground broke for the new Chapter House. The house was finished before the fall ’93 semester for the women moved in.
